Saltaire Primary School is linking up with Hirst Wood Regeneration Group to celebrate the bi-centenary of the completion of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in October. We are all so used to the canal being a part of our lives as a place to walk, ride bikes, catch fish, watch birds and occasionally ride boats but how much do we know about why it was built, how it was used, the structures along its course, the men and women who worked on it and how it works today? To help explain it, the pupils are going to paint a series of display boards to go up at Hirst Lock and they started to get their ideas together and make preliminary sketches in June with a trip to Bingley’s famous Five Rise Locks. Here are some photos of them hard at work.
