Making the canal visitor friendly

As part of our commitment to make our community a great place to live, we have ‘adopted’ a stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool canal from Victoria Road to Dowley Gap packhorse bridge. As a first step and with the help of Helen Thornton and Saltaire World Heritage Site, we have installed a couple of seats which we hope will make it easier for people who are a little less mobile to enjoy the canal One is on the Saltaire stretch overlooking the cricket pitch and the other between Hirst Lock and Dowley Gap. We’ve also erected a couple of signposts by the lock to help people find the pleasant river walk in one direction and the nature area in the other. The benches and signposts were made and installed by our friends at The Conservation Volunteers, Holly Bush who did such great work on the creation of the nature area.
