Jennie Disney, often also spelt as Jenny, was born on 5th September 1877 and baptised on 14th October 1877 at St Paul’s, Manningham. Jennie started work in the mills before she was 13. On the 1891 Census she was a worsted spinner and in 1901 a dress machiner, living with her married sister, Minnie. By the time of the 1911 Census she was a sewing machinist in the tailoring trade, still living with her sister on Salt Street. Jennie married James Harry Hamilton in 1917 when she was about 39 years old. James was a warehouseman and a widower aged 43 when they married on 5th March at St Chrysostom’s Church, Bolton Street, Bradford. It is sad to note that the Church fell out of use and was fairly recently demolished to make way for a new bypass and no photograph of the church can be traced. Jennie and James had both been living at West View, Heaton, and their only child, a daughter, Marjorie Cissy, was born a few months after their marriage. James Harry Hamilton was baptised in Manningham on 13 May 1873 and had become a plumber according to the 1891 and 1901
Census returns. He was living with his parents in Bradford in 1891 and was a boarder in Middlesbrough in 1901. He married Ellen Scott in Middlesbrough in
1904 and a daughter, Eliza May, was born in 1909. The family were living with Ellen’s mother in Middlesbrough when the 1911 Census was recorded. Ellen died in 1912 at the age of 44 and James moved back to his home town, Bradford. It is not known what happened to his daughter, Eliza May Hamilton. From 1933 until 1949 James and Jennie were voters living at 227 Bingley Road, Shipley. Their daughter, Marjorie Cissy, was living with them. On the 1939 Register, James was described as a journeyman plumber and Marjorie was working as a general clerk. Jennie died aged 71 on 15 March 1949 and was buried in Hirst Wood Cemetery three days later. James Harry Hamilton died the following year at the age of 77. He was buried with Jennie on 25th October 1950. I am grateful to Helen M Coan for allowing me to use this extract from her one-name study of Disney family
